This was the central theme of the second educational event of SPOTLIGHT, an itinerant journey dedicated to the culture of light, promoted by the Italian Design Institute and the CariPerugia Arte Foundation.

The event was held on Thursday, February 27 at 11:00 AM at the MUAM – Museum of Arts and Crafts (Gubbio, Via Cavour 7).

The morning began with welcoming remarks by:

After the opening remarks, the floor was given to Francesco Asdrubali, Full Professor of Environmental Technical Physics at the University for Foreigners of Perugia.

He began with a brief introduction on the importance of sensation and visual well-being, explaining how light affects our perception of reality.

The focus then shifted to the relationship between light and territory. Initially, the talk concentrated on light pollution, highlighting initiatives such as “M’illumino di meno”, the National Day for Energy Saving and Sustainable Lifestyles, which took place on February 16, 2025.

Next, the relationship between light and nature was explored.

In the Netherlands, on the island of Ameland, an innovative green lighting system was developed with the help of private sponsors.
This system not only preserved the dark sky, but also stimulated local flora and fauna, even encouraging the return of animal species that had disappeared due to the imbalance between daylight and artificial night lighting.

The presentation concluded with a focus on the relationship between light and urban scenography.
Starting from the works of Giorgio De Chirico, the speaker analyzed some of the most important architectural sites in the world, known for how they utilize light, such as the Mausoleum of Augustus in Rome and the Nasdaq Tower in New York.
